Lesson 5 -

Everything In Moderation, Including Moderation.

Everything in moderation doesn’t work (for me at least!). That’s not to say it won’t work for others, however, for me, it’s a phrase we use to make ourselves feel better about how we behave, but do we believe it?

My issue is that when we adopt an ‘everything in moderation’ mindset, we give ourselves permission and an excuse for anything we do, as long as we don’t overdo it. The problem with moderation is that it’s subjective, it’s vague, it’s ambiguous and open to interpretation. Our approaches to moderation is individual. Some may be able to have one chunk of chocolate and top, but many won’t (Me!), which is why it’s in my 39 lessons.

Have you ever noticed how it’s far easier to be moderate when it’s something you don’t like as much? Everyone can have strong willpower and be moderate in weak temptations, what about the strong temptations?

For me it’s easier to have none rather than some. Cutting out the offending item frees me from the internal negotiations. If there’s no open packet of biscuits, there is nothing tempting me to have just one more.

We are all different, if moderating works for you, go for it. If abstaining works for you stick with it.
