Lesson 23 -

Expect the Unexpected.

Expect the Unexpected

  • The phone rings just as you are about to leave the door

  • The computer crashes before you have saved your work

  • You lose your car keys when you need them most

Murphy’s Law states, “If anything can go wrong it will”.  Some things are within our control, some are not.

Conventional wisdom suggests the best course of action is adopting a positive mindset., but maybe there are times when some negative thinking is called for. Despite the benefits of positive thinking, every now and then we should intentionally think of the WPO (worst possible outcome). Because when we do, we can rehearse how we will react.

When we take an exam, revision pays dividends. We minimise the fight or flight response because we have practiced for what may come. We reduce stress and stay calmer. By practicing for the WPO, how we will respond and how we may feel, we create a safety net.

The process of planning for the WPO can build confidence, and when the worst that can happen does you will know how to react.

So, todays lesson is to expect the unexpected. Intentionally plan for what will happen when Murphy’s law strikes. By doing so, you are positively taking steps to prevent you from becoming at the effect of what can and will happen to you.
